SIBU 340 is designed to provide students with information about political behavior. Political psychology is an interdisciplinary field of research that blends experimental social psychology and political science. Although both theoretical and empirical works in political psychology are going to be covered in SIBU 340, experimental nature of the area will be emphasized. In short, political psychology is empirical, experimental, and person-oriented. It is assumed that research on political behavior becomes clearer and more understandable if the level of analysis is micro; that is, the individual himself / herself. 

Required Articles and Book Chapters
This part of the syllabus is subject to change. The purpose of scientific articles is to provide students with a general knowledge of political behavior and how political behavior is examined through the glasses of psychology. Visit internet page often for details and the list of new readings.

LECTURE PLAN IS GOING TO BE PRESENTED IN THE COURSE’S WEB SITE FOR EACH WEEK. SIBU 340 IS A COURSE IN WHICH STUDENTS ARE FREE TO DECIDE THE NEXT WEEK’S MINOR TOPIC RELATED TO
POLITICAL PSYCHOLOGY.

HOWEVER, THE MAIN TOPIC OF THE SPRING 2006 COURSE IS
POLITICAL VIOLENCE, TERROR, TERRORISM AND PEACE.

Evaluation of Student Performance and Grading

In sıbu 340 Course, you are going to be asked to present your knowledge in a critical and creative manner. Although, the format is similiar to standard examinations, the actual performance is dependent on your skills in analyzing, comprehension and written presentation. For these informed assignments and quizzes you will be able to use any material (books, your notes,… etc.). All assignments and quizzes will be evaluated on a 4-point-rubric scale.

Reaction Papers

1. Each week you are going to be asked to read articles (plus book chapters and lecture notes) and make comments on assigned articles. Although it is not required, you are free to use additional sources.
2. For each week, you also have to write a short commentary (maximum 3 pages) about any article presented in international magazines such as Time, Newsweek, Economist, … etc. The article should smell political and your commentary can be either political and/or psychological. (10 reactions papers are required for the course.)
